Question 1990 E40D started slipping today...

I drove ~600 miles the last couple of days and when I stopped for gas at about the 500 mile point my Bronco would not move forward until I put it in LOW(or I could rev it up until it moved). After that it seems to move along more or less fine, shift are soft, but have always been a bit soft, they're a little softer now.

When I slow down to come to a stop it also does not seem to downshift. If I downshift it manually everything works just fine...as a matter of fact, if I do all the shifting manually everything works just fine.

I checked my tranny fluid, appeared fine, but I added a quart since it leaks a bit and I hadn't added any in a while....didn't seem to make any difference.

Any ideas?

your mlps solenoid is going out. it controls the shifting of your tranny. ford carries this part for around 80 bucks i believe and its located on the side of the tranny, just not sure which side.

good luck

I believe on your 1990 the MLPS is actually called a neutral safety switch. Pretty much the same thing but they're called the MLPS on 94 and later. I was having problems with what I thought was my tranny slipping until it was suggested on this site to change out the MLPS........worked like a charm!

BGL, Just an update on my tranny repair! Yep it was the MLPS. I will say that it did not throw a code to the computer and therefor required me to argue with the tranny shop to do the work. The replacement of the solinoid and greasing the yoke cost me 130 bucks.

It was worth the risk of $130 vs. 750 that the tranny shop was looking at for. Thanks all for the help.

Good on you Pointer! Yea, I feel fortunate that I have a trustworthy tranny mechanic because he could have easily told me that my tranny is shot.

replaced the MLPS

(othewise known as Neutral Safety Switch).....didn't seem to make any difference. It's called a Manual Lever Position Switch according to my 90 Bronco Tech Manual.

Is there a solenoid that I should check to see if it could be causing the above noted symptoms before I drag it into a tranny shop? Another observation is that it seems to shift fine when cold, then as soon as it gets a little warm it starts acting up.
