Actually, it's semantics. "All wheel drive" is a term that can legitimately mean a lot of things.

To me, AWD is anything that can choose when to power which wheels, OR full-time but with a center diff like an NP203. And as stated by AK4X4, the new systems can choose how much and for how long to engage the front output - they lever a fork internally that mashes (auto trans) clutch packs together, but depending upon what the WSS's, tone rings, VSS, TPS (and probably other stuff) are telling it, it can engage the front with very little bias or a lot of bias, for as long as it chooses.

It also doesn't have to be rear drive/front on demand ....Quattros of old were front drive and could send a little (maybe up to 40%?) to the rear if needed. I honestly don't know how Subaru handled it when they went "auto" (and I don't care)

Anyway we can all believe what we choose, but AWD can mean a lot of things, and none of them are wrong.

Stick around long enough and the SD will be all electric with an electric motor on each wheel; thereby the PCM will tell each wheel when and how hard to pull.
Problem solved.
Driver now will not have to think at all!!!!

This is absolutely true, but they'll build a heavy duty AWD 'case first. I bet at least once a month Ford sees an attempted warranty claim for driving cross country in 4hi

Auto headlights, auto wipers, back-up cameras, collision avoidance and on and on. Hell even the old 2-tank fuel systems were deleted 'cause we can't expect the consumer to flip a switch to change tanks....there's no question Ford will try for AWD in the SuperDutys soon....I'd avoid the first couple model years of THAT - sounds like the latest assignment for the few gray hair engineers still employed from Team TFI and Team TTB!! They just finished botching the new Explorer so they need the next project...

I was speaking specifically about what Ford calls their different systems and what they mean. But from the perspective of all manufacturers I don't disagree with your statements, because as the technology in these systems increase, the functionality of different 4x4 systems overlap and function differently even though sometimes they are called the same thing. But before all this technology happened, traditionally AWD meant a non-selective all time 4wd with a center diff.
