Fuel gauge from Hell
I have an 08 F350 6.4, my fuel gauge took a dump on me a couple weeks ago. It would be buried on E with the low fuel light on and stating my range to E was 0 mi. Once I got below about a half tank it would read accurately(ish) about 75% of the time. It seemed like the colder the weather, the less likely it was that the gauge would show anything other than E.
I finally built up the courage to drop the tank and put a new sending unit in, 4 hours and $300 later, brand new Ford sending unit in the tank and the gauge still reads empty. On my 7 mile drive back from my buddy's shop the gauge started working accurately. I even stopped and filled the pickup to verify and it read full. The next morning I jumped into the pickup and the gauge is buried on E again.
I haven't had a chance to put the multimeter on the old gauge to see what the resistance numbers are, it could be that the old sending unit was still good. I'm thinking either wiring issue/short or my gauge cluster is on the way out?
Any ideas or experience with similar symptoms would be appreciated. I love this old pickup and I love not having a car payment, but as she ages she is getting harder to love all the time. I guess that is the case with everything that has a motor.

Do you have a Bluetooth obd II adapter? If so, torque pro apk is $5, load the custom Ford PIDs, and you can check what the pcm is down reading for fuel. If the pcm is all over, it's a wiring issue. If the computer is fine, cluster issue.
