I know this has been talked about before but I cant find a pic of the front of the engine to make sure I installed the head gaskets correctly. Does anyone have a pic of one? I really don't want to tear down the engine again just to make sure. I have been looking for the last 2 hrs and have not found a pic yet. any help would be great.
What motor are we talking about?
Gaskets most of the time are marked "top" or "front" if it makes a difference.

talking about the head gaskets. there is a way to tell from looking at them from what I have read but I would rather see a pic of them correctly installed with the head bolted on. I know there marked but its been a few months and I just have the bad feeling I put the DS on 180 out.
that was my bad, I needed the pic for a 75 390. I have to remove the heads anyway. got a head gasket leaking so didn't really matter after I found that. thanks
As a heads up, I thought I had a head gasket leaking into a cylinder but it turned out to be a leak between an intake passage and the coolant passage at the drivers front corner. I could have gotten away with just an intake gasket set but didn't figure that out until it was all apart. The new intake gaskets have an open slot between the coolant and intake passages that leads out from between the intake and the block so that a water leak will be obvious.
well this is new. I got the head gaskets installed and the engine all put back together. filled it up with coolant and started leaking coolant between the head and the block on the left bank in the rear. I have no clue what the hell I screwed up but now im out gaskets and all that time. this sucks.
thanks for the heads up lasermike, but I could see the oil coming out from the back corner of the head.
Sorry you're getting so hassled by your gaskets elkarcher. But thanks for the reminder that I need to track down more experiences with 400 head gaskets.
I think I asked it way back when on ProjectBronco, but haven't had a chance to revisit it lately.
Now I have something to look forward to!
Hope you get yours sorted out soon. And without multiple trips to the parts store!
The gaskets go on with the coolant passage to the rear. This means one will be right side up and the other will be upside down. I don't know if putting them same side up will create a coolant leak but it will lead to over heating.
Ok so I replaced the head gasket again and made sure it was installed correctly and again I am getting coolant coming out between the block and head. Do edelbrock heads require certain head gaskets? I didn't see anything saying I had to use their head gaskets. I have never had this issue and I am about to go crazy. I have no clue why this is happening. any help would be great. The right bank is fine and dandy no issues and I didn't do anything different. Could it be a cracked head?
