I recently aquired a 95' aerostar 4x4 w/4.0 and it has 200k on it. What troubles are notorious for these engines? It seems to sound good and only emits a puff of blue at startup (valve seals).
I like the power but it loves to drink the fuel. I get 10.2 MPG around town and my big diesel F250 gets 11. Go figure!
Wow, 10.2 mpg is kind of low. My 1990 awd ext/4.0 gets about 15 around town, and just over 20 on the highway. You may want to start with checking the general tune of the engine, like air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and EGO sensor.
The 4.0 liter engine is pretty underpowered in stock form, and the most common problem I've heard of is with head gasket leaks. The head design seems to encourage gasket leaks, especially when run very hard (as in forced induction).
I have 3.73 gearing, and the engine is out of tune very badly. But being the price I paid for it, I may just drive it until it dies. I would need a 6yr old kid to climb in there to get at the plugs and wires. As far as I know they are the originals with 200k on them. Because the first plug I pulled hardly had electrodes left. But I like the old saying, If it aint broke, don't fix it!!! And surprisingly enough, it runs decent.
That mileage way too low. Other 4.0s with over 200K achieve 18-20 mpg easily. Better start checking out a few things. Since you are likely running too rich, I would be worried about damaging your catalytic converter if this continues.
With just a little effort, you could really improve this poor beast of burden. That engine compartment looks intimidating but you will be surprised how accessible things are once you remove a few key components.

Well, today I guess it was conicidental, but my morning miss never went away. So I decided to go with a new set of motorcraft double platinum plugs and a new set of bosch wires. Let me just say the difference is between night and day. Smooth as silk. I also cleaned the mass air flow sensor screen with cleaner.
Will do some calculating and see what I end up for mileage. I find it hard to get over 12 around town being it is a 4x4. Who knows?
Yeah - I get 20mpg tops with my 4.0 on hwy. About 13mpg sounds right in town. I really thought the Americans were gonna stop the rising gas prices by getting rid of Saddam!
