Man, what a bad turn around for the Cubs. Leading in the 8th and a Marlins pop-up foul gets interferred with by a Cubs fan. Cubs end up losing 8-3. I'd hate to be that guy. A security team escorted the guy out for his own safety. Good thing - I would have punched him myself.
I've seen this happen before in lesser games. Maybe they should allow instant camera replay to scrutinize calls like these in games that are so important. Otherwise, design the stadiums so fans can't interfere with "playable" *****.
It's hard to say if Alou would have caught the ball even if the fan hadn't deflected it off his hand. It looks like his glove is still several inches below the ball and if the fan hadn't touched it, the ball would have continued on its original trajectory. I have seats about 10-12 rows back at Kaufman stadium in Kansas City. I can say that when a ball is coming your way and it has a little "heat" on it, your hands will go up in self defense. If Alou doesn't make the catch, maybe some fan gets hit by the ball. It's a shame that important games get decided by plays like these.
Don't blame the fan for interfering on a ball that probably would have been caught, blame the shortstop for booting a simple double play ball that would have gotten them out of the inning! If anyone is to blame on the foul ball conspiracy it is the ump that was standing about 3 feet away from Alou when it happened, if it was fan interference he should have made the call.
I agree, he should not have interferred with the ball.
But.....blaming an enthusiastic fan for losing a game that they were leading up to that point is ridiculous. They get paid millions of dollars, right? They should have kept their head in the game instead of focusing their energy on that foul ball interception.
Blame the fan, we need someone to blame! i saw the play and it made me want to go kick that guy's ***! but in all reality, it's not worth beating the guy up over.
I am sure the guy would have let moises catch the ball if he knew he had a play on it.... but who looks down to see if a guy's coming to save your sorry butt for looking down and taking your eye off the ball...and then getting konked on the head...and still costing him the play?
