Special connector?

Am about to start wiring a '50 Ford F-1 and in looking at the connections on the gauges, specifically the amp gauge, is there a special type connector for this gauge? All of the others have a screw to mount a wire to but as seen in the pics the amp gauge has some other type of connector. Thanks for any help received in advance.

Connection for amp gaugeated.

There is no physical connection to the ammeter. The ammeter uses the Hall Effect to measure current (not voltage). Simply run the insulated wire through the loop in the correct direction for positive or negative ground systems.

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu...etic/Hall.html

Nerd alert: Difference between a gauge and a meter (just for clarification). For automotive purposes a meter measures the rateat which something occurs (ammeter, speedometer), whereas a gauge quantifies a standard, as in pressure, distance, etc.

Please to excuse the stupid questions, but could you further explain? Do I just loop a 12 gauge wire through the loop and back to the breaker and how do I determine which direction to put the wire for a positive ground

In the illustration the ammeter is referred to as the "battery charge indicator". Just note the direction of the yellow wire from the circuit breaker to the battery terminal on the starter relay (do not attempt to loop the wire, just pass straight through one time). This is correct for a positive ground system. For a negative ground system simply reverse the direction of the yellow wire.

Is there a recommended gauge of wire for this?

Don't know

I am using 12 gauge wire throughout the wiring process but do not know if there is a specific gauge for that purpose.

The reason I ask is because the old wire that went through the AMP meter was fairly large. Read this from classic Instruments:

Yes, and it should be capable of handling the full capacity of the generator or alternator being used (right column). The pickup loop on the ammeter is capable of handling up to AWG 6 insulated wire.

That type of meter is direct reading and requires a shunt. It is internally shunted. Externally shunted meters can go much higher. The Ford ammeter operates on an entirely different principle where the actual current does NOT pass through the meter.

If you've ever seen a meter like this, it operates on the same Hall Effect principle as the Ford ammeter (never mind the probes).

Totally unnecessary, and extreme overkill, but won't hurt anything. May look very bulky though.

The wire thru the ammeter should be 10ga for 6V. Headlights and horn are 12ga, most of the rest of the wire is 14ga. The routing direction thru the ammeter shown on the diagram may not be correct, I routed mine opposite that for 12V neg ground and my ammeter reads backwards. I will just have to leave it that way as I can't work under the dash to change it.

If you bring it to the Ozark Mountain Run, maybe we could fix that.

It will also make it hard to fit the needed wires thru the bulkhead connector.
