All explorers i have seen....

ok i have to know for sure before i drop a ton of cash on tranny work. what is the cause of that wonderful leak on most exporers that (IT IS TRANNY FLUID) that drips down between bell housing and rear main seal? i am guessng here but i think it's either front tranny seal or some how the tranny is heating up and spilling out some unknown overflow tube? any ideas?

front tranny seal sounds like the culprit. i don't recall any type of "overflow" in the bellhousing.

On the older A4LD

Many have drilled out the fluid return hole to prevent pressure from building up. This seal is supposed to have almost no pressure on it. As the pump wears it leaks more. Even replacing the seal will sometimes not stop it leaking under high loads.

There is an overflow tube but you usually don't have a problem with this unless you get water in the fluid (radiator leak).

it's been awhile since i've had to replace one (lucky me!) but i'm sure they're basically the same... pull that tranny, if automatic pull the torque converter out & you'll see the seal. if manual, pull the tranny & see the throw-out bearing & fork. pull the throw-out bearing (clips to the fork i think) & you'll see the seal. the hardest part by far is dropping the tranny & putting it back. hope this helps, if i'm wrong somebody put me in my place. :-)

You can get a manual

at www.bulkpart.com for $16. A gasket rebuild kit is $27 which includes the front seal. At the time you do this, you ouht to replace the low/reverse servo seals with the improved design. Just four bolts. Your's is guaranteed to be bad. Basically you dig the old seal out. If you remove the pump, you will need a $100 alignment tool. The new seal gets staked in with double hits between the old ones. The new Microfelt filter for the 97+ transmission also fits this $10.
