Just because Clifford is mothballed doesn't mean I'm not around.
I helped a buddy with his 7.3 cyl heads the other day. 96 f250 with 218k. He was having overheating and pressure issues in the cooling system. Long story short the one head had been off before he owned. That head had barely tight head bolts and had blown the head gasket badly.
Well he pulled both heads. The one head had been maybe a reman that the gasket was blown on. The other original had terrible I take valve recession.
I never have seen such recession before. Well I think looking back and seeing others doing valve springs as well as mine. All that variation on shims to achieve correct installed heights...sure can't be ideal to cover up worn parts. Either way this is just mainly food for thought.
The left cylinder there ..wow
I have never seen such a thing ..and fairly low miles even.
All I'm saying is if you do 910's and no two cyl are shimmed the same...we better think twice about not pulling the heads..I know I'm second guessing some things now..
I took them to work and cleaned them all up.
All new Ford valves ,valve job, seals and 910"s and he should be on the road soon.
wish I had pics of them done but I got in a hurry...pizza was ready...
I had some heads like that on a junk yard engine, apperantly its due to dirt ingestion, cylinders were good but the intake valves looked just like that, I rebuild them but I guess it damaged piston rings in cylinder #5 and #7 because it wasn't long before it lost compression on those two cylinders and blow by got bad.
That's interesting Adam. When he bought it the turbo was trashed by debris and it had a terrible hodgepodge intake . It actually ran seemingly well untill this. I was amazed after seeing this that it did. I hope for his sake it keeps running good because he is very frustrated already. These Chevy guys may buy a 7tree but they don't have patience for a broke down Ford lol. He is a really good guy and I like helping him.
Fingers crossed dude, hope it lasts him, hey but im on the same boat as the chevy guy, but instead I get pissed when I have to work on a chevy even though they are easy to work on but don't like working on them lol
I am sure this is a problem on the heads of the engine I did last year. The shim heights were pretty uniform but a few were deeper that others. I would love to say that I am pulling the heads but that won't happen because I do not have a rebuilder any where nearby.
After doing the job I wondered how long it would last. My guess is not much longer.
