I have an 81 F-150 351/4x4. The reverse on my C6 will only idle backwards. It will not go any faster if you push the accelorator. Also, forget about going up the slightest incline in reverse. I don't know much about trannies. So, could someone tell me how hard it is to correct the problem. Or would it be cheaper/easier to put in a new tranny. If so, where should I get one?
What about 3rd gear, is it alright there? What about Manual 1, is it alright there too? Each of those positions use one each of the two clutches that are used together in Reverse.
If those two gear positions work fine, then maybe the manual valve isn't centered in Reverse. I would try disconnecting the shift linkage at the trans end, do it in Park and remember where it was. Then grab the shifter lever on the trans, and click it through all the positions, then back to Park, where you started out.
Then, with the linkage still disconnected, cycle the shift lever (the one inside the truck, this time) through all positions, then back to Park. Have someone hold the lever in Park, while you reattach the linkage underneath.
If that doesn't fix it, then maybe the valve body has some crud in one of the valves used in reverse.
Hi FTCF-150
Welcome to FTE! Sounds like your low-reverse clutch band needs to be tightened or replaced. If you are slipping in other gears too, check to see it your using the proper trany fluid...i think it's suppose to be Ford Motocraft or DexronIII ATF...NOT DEXRON II!

How difficult is band replacement? This would be the first time I attempt to work on a tranny. Would it be better to take it to a tranny shop? How much would be a reasonable price for repair?
Hi FTCF-150,
If you never went to trany school (i did) then you are better off having it done by a pro! You'd also need special tools to do the job correctly. The're nothing to fool with! This is a job that must be done right the 1st time! Should be about 1-2 hrs. labor involved for replacment or about 10 minutes to adjust (done in vehicle)!

The only band in a C6 is intermediate or 2nd gear. The clutches involved with reverse are the direct/reverse clutch and the low/reverse clutch. Torky2 above has the right info for diagnosis. If one of the clutches needs repair it is overhaul time.
