Draining an auto doesn't have to be messy.
The trick is to loosen one corner of the pan almost completely and just slightly loosen the other corners. You want one corner of the pan to hang down kind of acting like a funnel.
I didn't know Ford had 5 speed autos in 79, it would be interesting to know what model.
Do have a wide drip pan and keep some kitty litter handy for any spills anyway.
