Well I've added fog lights to the truck. I thought I got lucky with it being pre-wired so I bought the valance, light assemblies and switch. The fuse and relay were already installed either at the factory or by the original owner so I've got to figure out what I'm overlooking. Anyhow, I'm liking how it came out style wise and hope to get them functional soon as I work overnight and often drive through dense fog at times on my way home. Included pics but didn't have a before pic of the original side mirrors.
Edit: added pictures
I may be wrong, but I seem to recall other threads where people added fog lights to the pre existing wiring but needed the dealer or forscan to actually activate it
I wouldn't have thought of Forscan. I figured perhaps the plugs themselves as they didn't have any kind of protection to prevent water or dirt in there.
No such control of lighting.
The head light switch...pull it outward to power up the Valance lights.
Page 64 in owner manual, if originally equipped.
BTW those light are driving lights.
Fogs are yellow in color.
Good luck.
I was also looking into adding the fog lights in my old truck and No, you don't need any reprogramming. I have a 2001 XL and I have the fuses, and relays, and the wiring under the bumper. But when I pull my headlight switch I see that it is missing the lower wires that control the fog light relay. If you google you can find threads on other sights where they make it work. Basically I am missing the wiring between the main fuse block under the hood and the headlight switch. I suspect you are missing the same. When it warms up and dries out some I will look into it some more.
To use all stock parts you probably need the headlight switch with the pull for fog lights option. You would also need to add a hot wire from the fog light fuse in the under dash fuse block to the right pin on the switch. Then you need a wire from the headlight switch to the relay coil in the block under the hood. Google for the pin-outs and pictures.
I've got the Motorcraft switch with the pull for dogs but was aware that I could be missing the wiring from the main junction box to the switch. The threads I has seen about missing the wiring also mentioned needing the plugs so I thought I had all of it already. Mine is also a 2001 Xl.
On the back of the headlight switch do you have the yellow wire on pin 5 and the white/black wire on pin 2? If not you need to add them.
Those are the wires that I am missing.
So I am missing the two wires on the back of my switch. The website you linked will help complete the circuit? I must admit I'm not all that understanding of electronics but am fortunate that I know an aircraft mechanic that is lol

Unfortunately the truck didn't come with fog/driving lights from the factory so I decided to add them. Another poster informed me that I need two more wires on the back of my switch to finish the project but I will still take a look at the page when I get to my computer (had to download owners manual). I did purchase a new Motorcraft switch with the pull for fog option.

That's all I have until it warms up and dries out enough for me to get in there myself.
Basically you need to energize the coil of the relay. I have even been toying with the idea of adding a jumper from the coil of the headlight relay to trip the fog relay so they would just come on when the headlights are on. It would work in a pinch but it's not the right way to do it.

I think I understand what you're saying. It just started raining here as if Houston didn't get wet enough from the busted water main last week. I did see a third connector behind the switch that doesn't plug in anywhere, would that be for auto headlights?

I'm pretty sure that extra connector is for trailer brakes.
That’s splitting hair as far as color goes and US regs or lack thereof. Fogs sit low to cut under the fog. Driving lights supplement high beams and sit higher—like those cute lights on ‘05-09 Mustang GTs. Never got why folks want high beams and fogs on at the same time, since you can’t follow both at the same time. Another subject for another thread, though.

Indeed, for auto lamps. Trailer brake controller sits by the OBD plug.
Stinks you didn’t get those two wires, though. Wonder what the thought on the assembly line was there? “Oh, LOL! We’re out of pigtails, boss!”?
Well seeing as the online manual states that the V6 5 spd combo can only tow about 3k I suppose I can skip the trailer brakes lol. Perhaps I can repurpose some of the wires off of that connector though?
I have installed the lights and have a new valance is on the way so I'll soon be needing to track down the wiring. I was going to skip the valance, but the non-fog valance looks like @$$ when you cut it to clear the lights. However I can't see spending $60 or more on a new headlight switch so I'm going to trigger them with a cheap toggle switch. I'm hoping to get to wiring it this weekend so I'll let you know how it works out.
Lights - $60
Valance - $100
Toggle - $10
Wire - I probably have some in a junk box.
