Taking the truck for exhaust install next week... looking for recommendations. I've tried a few ewetube videos but they dont do any justice...
460, good cam profile, headman headers, 3"...
I want a deep loud profile but not obnoxious...
Thoughts??
Can't say enough about my trual dual exhaust with Flowmaster 40 series cans. Great sound at idle, throaty sound under acceleration but definitely not loud enough to **** off the neighbors.
When these wear out I'll put new ones right back on.
It wasn't a 460, but the 351M I had in my 79, I ran dual exhuast (2 1/4") with 31" glasspacks. Sounded nice...the 268 Comp Cam helped with the "noticable" idle and I had people asking me if it was a 390. Hahaha
Not the greatest video (sounds better if you have a speaker that'll play some bass notes), I'll make a new one some day, but here's my 78 Bronco with a Magnaflow muffler on it. It's basically a stock 351M with a 4bbl Holley Sniper and some headers. Y-pipe into a 3" in/out Magnaflow then down and over the axle and out the passenger corner of the rear by the bumper.
My Bronco will eventually get a 460 put into it this year, so I'll have to at a minimum modify the current exhaust. I really like the sound of the Magnaflow though.
On my high boy 428 CJ with crossover headers my options were limited due to the amount of room . I went with 48" old school glass packs and I have to say the sound really is hard to beat. the key is the fact they're 4' long, I've spent a whole lot more and been a lot less satisfied with mufflers more than once. .
Whichever muffler you choose, the way you route the pipe after the muffler will have a large impact on the sound. Shorter the pipe, the more raspy it will sound, longer will provide more resonance. I have a briggs 16hp opposed twin. Essentially a lawnmower engine. With just the mufflers, sounds like a lawnmower. But, same setup with approx 4ft of 2.5” pipe added over the mufflers and tied together with a single exit, it sounds like a loud Harley.
On my trans am and a ford pickup I installed SpinTech mufflers. Similar vehicles with flowmasters sounded nothing like em. Very unique. My 98 f150 i took off the magnaflow and put on a flowmaster. To my surprise, there was no change in sound.
My recommendation, if you wanted to be different and have a sound that almost nobody around you does, go with the spintech. If you wanted “cookie cutter” tones, go with the flowmasters.
I heard some nice rumblers the other day on a dentside while we were sitting at a stoplight. Can’t say for sure what they were but the fresh decal in the rear window was for Black Widow Mufflers.
