New to me (Excursion Intro)
- Hello there,
For about 3 months I had been looking for a F250 or F350 diesel. They have the tow capacity I need, along with off road ability. But...its not really what I want.
Saturday (02/22/20), I was sitting at a bar just watching the trucks go by, looking for style that I liked. Living in SC...almost everyone has a truck.
Then I saw this, lifted, red beast roll by. No clue what it was, but it was a huge SUV and looked like I needed a ladder to get into it. I don't need a vehicle that high off the ground, but I do need one that is about that length. I snapped a picture so I can zoom in on the logo..."FORD EXCURSION" I had never heard of it, but if it has the tow capacity, it will certainly put it ahead of the F-Super duties. I got home and put my GOOGLE-FU to good use.
V10? 11000-12000 lbs tow capacity (three different sites had three different capacities...11 is good enough) I must have this thing.
So this past Monday, I found one nearby and bought it without a test drive or anything. I am sure that if I had a wife or girlfriend, she would have made me test drive and ask questions. but I don't...so I bought.
its a 2001, limited, 4wd, 6.8l v10.
yes..it has issues. - its leaking oil from somewhere (google suggests oil cooler gasket)
- there is a pop sound (exhaust stud manifold or blown sparkplug)
- steering is very loose ( sway bar connecter bushing bad, maybe even the steer box needs to be rebuilt)
- lock actuators don't work (got one working on Tuesday. ordered new ones to replace the others.)
- VHS player is missing. (how am supposed to watch my movies without a VHS player?)
- Some rust, but nothing major. at least not yet. I have to clear the dirt from the undercarriage to see if there is any bad rust.
- gear indicator is incorrect. (I figured out how to fix this, will try it when I get home today)
- Even with all this...I am super excited. This beast will pull my future camper and allow my to partake in Overlanding. After I get the engine to par, I am going to give it a 4 or 5 inch lift, bigger tires, rebuild the inside, add off road bumpers and a heavy duty roof rack.
I look forward to learning more about this vehicle from ya'll and swapping stories. I cannot wait to hit the trails with this beast that I have named GRUMPY.
for those of you interested, this is the video that sealed the deal for me. Any 4x4 SUV with a 10,000 lbs+ tow capacity that can climb walls...I must have.
if the link don't work, the title of the video is Moab Hells Gate "Jeeps are for beginners"
Thank you for allowing me to join and think you for reading.
