Welding question

I am going to cut off my muffler and put a y pipe on. I was wondering if its better to weld or clamp the pipes on. Will it make a difference in sound? I dont really want to weld them on since i am afraid my truck will be too loud and the cops will want me to put my muffler back on. My trucks a 88 F-250 V8 351, so would it be within legal sound limits for my truck? Thanks for any advice you could give me.

If you cut off the muffler and leave the cats, then it will not be too much louder. The cat is what quiets it down the most. It is the most restrictive item in the exhaust/which in turn quiets it.

As for welding/clamping, it will not make any difference in sound. You can always sawzall the pipe and re-install a muffler later.
