I just bought a set of variable rate springs for my truck. They are Moog and considered stock.... I have a 1 1/2" spacer to level the truck on now with original springs.
My question before putting the new springs on is, would you install the new springs with or without the spacer? The Moogs are about 1/2" longer than the old stock ones.and again variable rate. If the new springs will keep it level without the spacer would be my preference. I don't want to do the install twice if I don't have to. Which way should I try to have the best chance of still being level on the first try? Sandy
There's no way to know unless you knew for sure that your old springs were still at their original height and had not sagged before you put in the spacers.
Generally though, you'd still use the spacers with the new springs if you want it to sit level. Because the new springs are designed to keep the truck stock height (which you did not like) then you're 90% likely to install them after the fact anyway.
Because it's a bit of a gamble either way, I'd just install the spacers along with the new springs and see what you get. There's still a chance that you think it's too high and will remove the spacers, but I think that's less of a likelihood than liking it without the spacers.
Don't mean to put you through extra work, but I still say it's a gamble either way. Just better odds keeping the spacers.
They are typical off the shelf metal spacers designed to level the truck. Nothing special. Involved in the decision is the springs on now have 91K on them so there has to be some height lost due to some wear. The PO had a 5th wheel and I got it at 87K and never use it for hauling. I have Bilstein shocks on now and stock size tires.
2 inches is required to level these trucks. The spacers are great. I don't think you would even see the half inch ln the springs. Also, those springs only use the second windings if you are completely compressing the front suspension.
Since they are variable that's what I was thinking about the length. I'll go ahead a put the spacer back in when I put it back together. Thanks guys. Sandy
