Don't know about other states but in Texas it has to be weighed then if rated for 2 tons it has to be tagged for empty weight plus 2 tons as a minamin . So 12,000 plus 4,000 . Thats under CDL and DOT regs
So it is possible for OP to register the truck under 26001 if need be.
I didn't look up historical tags as he says he's going to use it to haul cars in place of a trailer. That could eliminate "historical" use, although more inquiry with the state would be in order.
Thanks all,
Yeah I don't haul a bunch, just my old classics here and there etc. I could probably (?) get away with Collector Plates. I'll do a bit more digging on all of this. Waiting for the farmer to get back from vacation to send me the picture of the plate to see what we're dealing with here.
It can be tagged for under 26000. That 27000 is max gvw. but who paid attension back in the day. As I posted eairler weight it plus what you think how much weight going to haul.
Farmer got back to me, said the tag said GVWR is 27000. Bummer - I have no CDL and won't be getting it.
Back on the hunt for another one more suitable.
Lots of these around, lots of single axle newer rigs. Fire trucks might be something to look for. Low miles, well maintained. Watch the GVWR of course, and don't buy a 401/477/534.
