That makes up for some of the weight difference. So comparing equally equipped long bed F350 srw trucks, the 7.3l truck should have anywhere from as little as 200# more payload(11,900gvwr vs 12,400), to as much as 600# more (11,400gvwr vs 11,500). Short bed 7.3l 500# more (11,300gvwr vs 11,500).
(F350 GVWR 7.3l/6.7l)

I could be missing something but thats how I see it. Not quite 800# but definitely more payload capacity nonetheless.
I have some real world numbers. I traded my 2019 F350 SRW CCSB 6.7 Lariat Ultimate for a very similarly equiped 2021 F350 SRW CCSB 7.3 Lariat Ultimate Tremor. I added a couple things like heated rear seats and adaptive cruise that I missed on my 19. I ran both trucks across the CAT scales loaded with all my stuff, me and full of fuel (again with the same tool box, tools and similar stuff). The 2019 was 9040 lbs and the 2021 was 7920 lbs. I am not sure where the extra 1,120 lbs comes from but I suspect in addition to the 800 lb difference in the engines is all the extra stuff hanging off the 6.7. I am not sure if the turbo is included in the engine weight or not, but feel certain DPF, DEF tank and other emissions stuff has to add significant weight. I went from 11,500 GVW in the 2019 to 11,300 in the 2021 but gained payload. The 2019 payload sticker was 3439 and the 2021 payload sticker is 3866. The payload sticker on my 2021 does not match up to real weights. I was at the 11,500 lb GVWR when I dropped my fifth wheel 2,500 kingpin on my 2019 and I have about 950 lbs of additional payload with the 11,300 lb GVWR 2021. 4wd6.7L, like you, I could be missing something but the CAT scales are certified and say I gained more than the 800 lbs in the lighter engine even losing 200 lbs in the GVWR. Everyone please let me know if I am missing something.

I'm using an Andersen Ultimate. I really like it but I'm considering a Reese Goosebox.

Just got back from the Las Vegas NASCAR Race pulling our 5th wheel. This truck pulls great up any grade, not a single truck pulling a trailer or 5th wheel passed me on any grade. Not saying someone couldn't pass me, but no one did.
Our 5th is right at ~12k.

How was your mileage to Vegas? I hope to be close to your MPG since my 5er is 12k also. I plan to make my second camping trip with the new 7.3 for spring break next week. It will be two hours round trip on rural roads. I plan to get my first towing MPG numbers. I forgot to reset my trip meter and/or hand calculate my first trip.

This trip to Vegas I drove a little faster than I should have, mileage was right at 8.2. I think if you can keep your speed around 63 you'll have pretty good mileage. Since you have a Tremor, the 35" tires won't do you any favors in mileage.

Thank you for the reply! I am currently in the research phase of buying a truck and trailer/5th wheel. I have three more years in the military and plan to travel America for a year straight with my family of 5 when I get out, before starting a new job.

I’m trying to decide between gas or diesel and travel trailer or 5th wheel. Normally I am very decisive and decisions come easy, but I have been pondering this one for years! Haha.

Anyways, I’ve heard/read a lot of good things about the goose box. My biggest question is if that would work in your truck as it appears to be a standard bed and not long bread. Is your current Anderson hitch a slider?

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and any other information advice you can give. Greatly appreciated.

The Anderson isn't a slider. You do gain extra clearance with it the way it's designed. The Red coupler on the 5th can be positioned forward (towards the truck) and it pushed the 5th wheel back ~2" .
The hitch in the truck pushes the mounting point back ~4". The bolt behind the ball is centered over the factory ball mount.
I would do what you're doing now, asking questions. In three years we will probably see many changes in the truck and RV world,
Thank you for your service!

Why gas?

Sweet setup man! Great looking truck and trailer!

Can I ask why you switched to gas from your diesel? I am contemplating buying the same truck you have and curious for your reasons on switching. I’m thinking it will most likely be the justification to push me over the edge on committing to 7.3.

Thank you for any input you can give.

Our diesel was a F250 and we were overweigh with the 5th wheel. We needed a F350, I always thought the diesel wasn't working hard pulling our ~12k 5th wheel. Around that time Ford announced the new 7.3 gas as a engine that was designed to fit where you really didn't need a diesel and you wanted a little more power than what was currently available. I use our truck to commute to work which is 6 miles one way, the diesel wouldn't get to normal operating temperature on the drive. I know the 7.3 was the right decision.
