I've got one laying around it just doesn't have Ford linkage on it so I wouldn't be able to drive it, unfortunately. I guess I can see if it'll idle better. I'll give it a try when I get home.
There's a guy near me that works on old cars that I've done a few favors for. I asked him to take a look at the carb while I have it off as he has vastly more experience than me. All the gaskets looked right and the jets were the correct size too so I think it might just need to be cleaned out again.
I'll let you guys know how it goes. I may just throw it out and grab a new one. $200 ish doesn't seem bad at all.
Had that exact issue on my 390, i took the carbs throttle plate off and replaced the gasket that bolts it to the body. Turned out i had an accessive amount of fuel still trickling in while i was on the idle circuit.
I put the other carb on the truck, it's some half computer controlled smog Holley from the late 80s but I figured it would work just to see how it idles.
Boy the difference. It didn't even need a choke and idled all smooth and nice like it was supposed to with good throttle response. That confirms that it was the carb that was the issue.
Now to track down what's funky in the carb (or just buy a new one because frankly I have almost no idea what I'm doing when it comes to carb issues)
Pulling it apart and making sure all the mating surfaces are flat would be a good start? Maybe blowing out the idle circuit?
The diagram describes a check ball that goes under the needles (what the gas comes out of?) But only in certain years of carbs? I didn't put one in when I put it back together but it could have fallen out. I don't think it had one when I took it apart. Would that cause the engine to not respond to the idle screws?
It has a list number of 7986 and I believe it was made in the late 70s?
Sorry about the 2V statement, had you confused with another thread. Did you look at post 7? Has really helped me with sorting out the Holley problems as they age.
