Small gas tank size

I have a 2017 F150 XLT 4 door 4WD. I have a pretty small gas tank at 23 gallons and I feel like I’m always filling up. Does anyone here know if there’s room underneath for me to have the current gas tank removed and have a shop install a larger one like 30+ gallons? Also how much ballpark would it cost me to have a shop do the entire installation for me? Is it a complicated process? Thanks

Welcome to FTE!

Yes, there's room, you can have the optional 36 gallon tank installed. I would ballpark it around $1000 if you have a shop do it. And it's been done, repeatedly:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...swap-done.html

There are lots of threads on this, but that one has pics and maybe video of the whole job.

Good luck with it!

Just thinking out loud here. But wouldn't a nice Diamond Plate, bed mounted tank be larger, cheaper, and easier to install? Not only that, but it can be tee'd and gravity fed into the existing fuel line. So when both tanks are filled, your gauge would continue to show "FULL", until the fuel in the bed mounted tank was exhausted, and the level of the main tank began to drop. I had a similar arrangement installed in a Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel, and it worked very well. With both tanks filled I had a 1,000 mile range.

Do a search on this forum because a few members have actually swapped out the stock 23 gallon tank for the stock / optional 36 gallon tank.

Maybe not the best solution. First off the PCM will complain and throw codes because it will believe that the fuel level sending unit is defective. Why ? because it it calculated the mileage and your MPG is far and above the norm (Still showing full while driving many miles), I had this same problem on my old F250 where I had installed a much larger tank. There was no way to reprogram the PCM back then, but it worked well as long as things stayed normal. But one time I was pulling a very large Toyhauler trailer, with a 40mph tail wind. The PCM determined that the truck was getting to good of MPG's and thru codes which then shows you the wrench light in the dash. The recommendation for this type of modification is to have the tank replaced with a Ford 36 gal unit and reprogram the PCM with the same configuration.

These newer trucks have way to many computers.

Pretty sure a gravity feed would run the in-bed tank out all over the ground via belching it out of the filler and flooding the evap system.

Last I searched, no one is offering an auxilary in-bed gasoline tank. Maybe a transfer tank.

You can get away with a lot of things with diesel. Gasoline not so much.

The OP says he has a 23 gallon tank, that means he has a 3.0 diesel and there is no other tank that can be swapped. If the OP has a gas truck it has a 26 gallon tank and can be swapped to a 36 gallon tank. He also would not be able to use a in bed transfer tank for gasoline.

Ford didn't offer the 3.0 diesel in 2017, right?
He must be confused by thinking he has a 23 gallon tank when he actually has a 26 gallon tank.

That’s pretty new. If I had the 3.0 diesel...I’d have to get the Titan tank.

The titan tank is a great option for the 3.0 with 6.5 bed. Glad they came out with a solution.
