Buying a PSD

I'm looking to buy a PSD. I like the 96/97 body style (crew cab with a short bed) plus they are older and more affordable.
I'm also new to PSD, ford man all my life but no history with diesels.

Is there a difference in the 7.3 over the years......is it cheaper to up grade a 99 vs a 97.
I have a 97 4.6 with an auto tranny. This trans has caused me to want a manual in my new truck. Any suggestions on a manual/auto tranny in a 97?

If I had it to do all over again I would have picked the manual trans. Don't get me wrong I have not had any problems with my E40D but I just don't like the way it shifts and I have heard so many guys having so many problems with it.

Yes there are differences, hp and torque have increased over the years. In my opinion only, I would go with a 99 or newer. They already have an intercooler and I like the 6 speed. There are also more upgrades available.

I'm with powerstroker...I'd go the 99 or newer because of the upgrade in HP and torque.
