I've noticed that on the 2WD 78-79 Fords the rear axle is narrower than the front, which to me, I don't like. Makes the truck look wimpy. On my '79 F350 for example, the rear tires are set in about 1 inch inside the fender lip, whereas my front tires are pretty much even with the fenders. I hate it!! That's why I was looking into putting some spacers on the back. But then I would probably have bearing or lug issues. GRRRR
But yet on the 4WD Fords the axles look the same width, so you get a nice mean appearance where all four tires properly line up with the fender lips.
I think I may have read somewhere that even on some more modern trucks, its common that the front and rear don't track exactly the same width.
What was the reason they were made like this? Was it to allow heavier loads on the rear or something?
