2WD "Stance" and axle width

I've noticed that on the 2WD 78-79 Fords the rear axle is narrower than the front, which to me, I don't like. Makes the truck look wimpy. On my '79 F350 for example, the rear tires are set in about 1 inch inside the fender lip, whereas my front tires are pretty much even with the fenders. I hate it!! That's why I was looking into putting some spacers on the back. But then I would probably have bearing or lug issues. GRRRR

But yet on the 4WD Fords the axles look the same width, so you get a nice mean appearance where all four tires properly line up with the fender lips.

I think I may have read somewhere that even on some more modern trucks, its common that the front and rear don't track exactly the same width.

What was the reason they were made like this? Was it to allow heavier loads on the rear or something?

Depending on what rims you are running, you could look for the same style with a different backspacing that would even them out.

I believe axle widths are the same 2wd or 4wd.

Just run 1” wheel spacers or get wheels with different offsets.

I never noticed any axle width differences on my '79.

i was looking at a set of spacers but i also saw horror stories where the lugs pulled out of the spacer...so that scared me off some

also, i am a little concerned about extra wear on the bearings. Granted, rear bearing are probably tough as hell on a one ton F350 anyway

Just get rear wheels in the same style but with different backspacing and be done with it.

Never bothered me, especially from behind the steering wheel. I get more irritated with body panel gaps.

Did you know that trucks like yours often (if not always) came with wheels that were 9.75" wide and carried a heavier wt rating?

That wheel obviously widened the track width by a couple inches each side.

Again, in original form, i believe your D70 axle has the same WMS to WMS as the D60 3/4 ton trucks.

The load on the bearings would be the same with a 1" spacer as it would a wider wheel.
