weird theory
I am trying to find an answer to this problem - my auto transmission seems not to have a 3rd gear in it. I dont have any blinking o/d light but i do have a check engine light.
Somebody told me that plugged catalytic converters could be a culprit? sounds wierd to me.
I took it to a tranny shop and they want to rebuild it. I got the code and it dosnt even exist (alldata.com and also chilton's website)
any advice
I have a 97 F 150
Thanks,
Earl
My sister just had some problems with her tranny (manual) not having 1,2,5,R gears. The synchornizers got crunched. She had to have it rebuilt. $1100 and a lifetime warranty.

What tranny do you have?
What is the code that you are getting? Did you use a scanner that tells you what it means?
Alot of auto parts stores, including AutoZone, will scan it for free.

I think your cats are fine. They don't just clog up and even if they did, it wouldn't affect your trans.
More likely there is something missing on the vacuum side of things and the check engine light might want to tell you something about that. It is impossible that you can't find the code anywhere. Go to AutoZone and have them check the code or buy an OBDII reader to read it yourself.

The code the tranny shop gave me was PO740. I have the 407w0 or something like that ..... I dont have a blinking o/d light - and when I drive it, I go about 30 mph.... then just feels like it's in neutral. Seems as if there isnt a 2 - 3 upshift .... no third gear.
I tried to find out what the code was - but the souces i have dont have that listed. I checked the fluid - full and pink.
As far as the catalytic converter theory - well i kinda knew just wanted to make sure :-) .
I do have both catalytic converters plugged.......
As far as the check engine light ( i forgot the code) - I believe its either a crankshaft position sensor or camshaft position sensor. (something that deals with the timing)
Just dont ask me what else is wrong with my truck! ...
I could start another thread about it.
Thanks,
Earl

I think you should get it scanned again and see what code they come up with this time.
No 3rd or 4th gear can be caused by a direct clutch problem but since your fluid seems ok that's not likely. It can also be caused by a bad shift solenoid. Or by something that controls either of these.

But: I'd first fix the problem triggering the check eingine light. If the transmission doesn't know what exactly the engine is doing (e.g. rpm?), it may act up and throw another code that's bogus. You'll have to do some serious research to get this one figured out or find a very trustworthy shop (yeah, right!) out there to do it for you.
