hello new to the forum so hopfully somebody can answer a question I have an 1984 b2 4*4 about 2 years now and love it,
just found a 87 ranger with 8.8 l/s 4.10 rear end and 4.10 front gears also 4 inch sus. lift. well i switched the works over to the b2 and realized the rearend spring brackets are bout 1.5'' shorter than the original will it hurt to drive it like this or should i spend the money to have the brackets moved
thanks for any help i can get dont want to mess up myfavorite ride
I've always heard that you need to move the spring perches on the Ranger axle to match the B2 springs. It seems to me that if you leave it as is, you're putting a lot of lateral load on the spring hanger (front of leaf) and the shackle (rear of leaf). Those weren't designed for much lateral stress. Sping perches shouldn't cost more than about $30 for a pair, and a decent welder could install them in just a few minutes.
The other thing you need to check is the pinion angle with the new axle. If it's not right (or very close to right), you'll burn up U-joints or possibly a pinion bearing. Since the driveshaft length on the B2 is so short, the pinion angle can change significantly with just a minor alteration. New spring perches installed at the proper location would solve both the spring and pinion angle problems.
But I'm no expert, so check into it a little further before you go out and spend your cash.
