I have always pulled a conventional bumper pull style RV. I am considering a 5th wheel. My TV is a 2003 F-250 Crew cab short box with the 6.0 diesel. I was looking in the manual this morning at towing capacities. According to this my max trailer weight without a 5th wheel is 12,500 and with a 5th wheel it drops to 10,600. Why is that?
Fifth wheels generally put around 15-20 percent of their weight over the bed of the truck. What does your yellow sticker on your drivers door jam say as far as combined weight? Mine for example says 3480 and max fifth wheel towing rating of 12500 for my truck. If your door sticker says for example 2200-2700lbs you would max out on weight over the rear axle before hitting your max trailer weight.
