Hey y'all, so I bought this cheap set of side mirrors off ebay and they are the style of the newer super duty trucks, 2010+. They fit ok but as I suspected, the turn signals on the mirror and built in defrost do not work. I do not have the correct wiring for them. My question is if any of you have upgraded their side mirrors to the new style and can you tell me how to wire for the turn signal. These mirrors are huge and kind of overkill so if I cant figure out a fix, I will pull them and send them back.
Plenty of write ups here if you search to get a better understanding. You will need a wire scheme for the mirrors you have now or pop the lens out to see what wire does what for the mirror.
Then splice the clearance running light to any brown wire under the dash. The left turn signal to the green wire with white stripe, and right turn signal to a white wire with blue stripe. You can wire heat to a constant source when the truck is on or to a toggle switch. Dont forget the ground. Hardest part is running wires through the boot in the door.
Thanks! Over the years I have had a few close calls concerning vehicles beside me that I simply did not see in the smaller OEM mirrors. These big ones offer more vision but, they indeed are huge. I will get used to them and I plan to figure put how to make them work. Thanks for your suggestions.
When you say "the green wire with the white stripe" which one are you talking about? There are TWO green wires with white stripes and TWO white wires with blue stripes. How do you know which of the wires to use, does it even matter?
Also, instead of using a constant hot wire, I would like to power the mirror heat selector switch via the cabin defrost selector. I have an old Haynes manual but their electric diagram leaves a lot to be desired. Any idea which wire to tap into off the AC selector that is hot when defrost is selected? Thanks.
Are you at the bundle of wires coming through the fire wall? When I did mine, I mistakenly tapped into a green wire with yellow stripe. The wires had collected some dirt in the 20 years and made it difficult to distinguish yellow and white. The white with blue tracer was easier to identify for me. IIRC, there are other similar colored schemed wires but the tracer is different thickness. You can confirm what you're exactly looking for by inspecting the wire going to the appropriate bulb in the housing.
You can also either tap into them to trial them or use a light probe with the signals activated to determine you have the correct wires. Or I've seen some people run wire all the way to the turn signals themselves but that's unnecessary extra work IMO.
Thanks. Indeed, there are TWO of those wires of both color schemes mentioned, just finished checking. I don't think it will matter which one is chosen as a source (they both test equally) its just that nobody mentioned it. Another tip I would like to mention is using Vaseline to lubricate the inside of the rubber boots to help the coat hanger "wire puller" slide the wires through. I was able to pull all four at one time.
Thanks for all your help and a quick reply.
