Hello guys,
I recently (Feb 1st) bought an '02 f150 supercrew that has extensive rust on the rocker panels. I really dont want to throw too much money at it to have new panels welded on, so I am trying to find slip on rocker panels. I have searched online but have found multiple variations. Does anyone know a place that I can get in touch with for some decent slip ons that will fit?
The tailgate is unusable due to rust under the hinge mount causing the mount to be bent away from the tailgate. Can a piece of sheet metal be welded in place so that a new mount can be attached?
The doors also have a little bit of rust at the bottom, is there any kind of slips or stick on covers that I can place there to cover the removed rust spots? Driver side front -the worst Driver rear Passenger front Passenger rear
The side step rails also bend down some when stepped on, does this mean the pinch weld is weakened?
A good look at the situation will show that cosmetic panels will not prevent eventual CAB structure failure.
That means the doors will begin to stick and go out of alignment as the cab mounts rust way.
A super crew is among the most expensive to repair because the replacement panels are part of the center cab post, front and rear cab locations.
A truck has to be still in very good shape and deemed worth the cost of this repair.
The doors have to come off and possibly the box has to come off to put repair corners in the rear of the cab to complete the job.
You could see estimated as high as $5000 for this kind of work and parts, labor and painting...
Only a truck being restored and not driven much would be a consideration.
First locate and price the panels and the cab ends if you can find them.
This will make your decision for you in a hurry on a 17 year old truck.
BTW, get under the rear and look at the frame area near the driver side spring shackle mount. You may have a surprise waiting for you what with all the other rust out you have shown.
Ask me how I know all this!
Good luck.
Yea, I know, i havent looked yet at how bad the rust is where the suspension attaches, really out of fear, but I know doing the rear wont be too bad but havent researched doing the front yet.
as far as rocker panel rust, if I clean up the rust, apply rust reformer and some under coating to prevent further rust and them the slips applied, based off the pictures, you think I could get at least 5 more yrs out of it? How long can it last if I do nothing but further rust prevention to it?
the truck runs great, rides smooth, only has abs related codes, and other than rust appears to have been well taken care of. Tranny rebuilt 5 yrs ago.
Well I just bought a 2001 F150 Lariat with 144,000. It has this same problem. Both sides rusted just below the rubber kick pad. The bottom all the way across is completely rusted out. No sign of door misalignment. Not sure if there is any hope to repair this but hoping the doors will still latch for another five years.
well guys, quick update, this truck has been parked permanently. The frame of all things broke about 8 inches forward of the rear wheels........on both sides! so I ended up taking the engine from this truck and putting it in my 01 f250 superduty. I appreciate everyones response and am quite thankful that I did not spend any money on fixing the rust or anything else for that matter. but Im not mad because I spent 1700 on the truck which has now provided me with a second engine and a rebuilt tranny for my SD.
I am having a similar issue with my 2002 SCAB 4x4 4.6L. The drivers side has quite a bit of rust from the cab corner to the middle of the drivers door. I bought a slip on rocker from Rock Auto. I wondered if anyone knew if you have to take off the doors, front quarter, and bed to do this install? I was going to use panel bond adhesive and rivets.
My son just purchased a 1999 F150 supercab with this same issue. The front bed mounts are mostly gone, driver's side rear shackle rusted through (replaced), but the frame itself looks okay. I'll have to check Rock Auto for those panels.
Wanted update you guys, the rust was quite worse than I had originally thought. I noticed one day, after hearing squeaking for a week, that the bed was resting against the can of the truck. I first thought rusted bed supports but upon further investigation I found the frame had split from top to bottom just in front of the rear wheels. So yea the truck is gone and I took the engine from it and swapped it into the 02 f250.
thanks for everyone's input!
