7.3 idi hard starting
ie.. is the starter and Batteries up to par ... have the Glow plugs been tested so as you know this stuff is good or not... the question as asked doesn't give us much as there are many things that can cause a hard start.

Starter and batteries are good cranks faster than i can count not sure on how to test glow plugs but doesn't click rapidly when i turn the key to the on position as for compression what should it be at i think ill be able to check the compression in a few day the truck also smokes real bad after idling for 10 min if i take it for a drive its stops smoking again cold starts in the morning smoke like crazy and has a really strong raw diesel smell that burns your eyes
as Far a Compression.... it should be no less than 25% of your highest cylinder reading on a warm engine... FORD says from 195 to 450... they don't specify a set Number 350 is Optimal 300 is fine anything less is Questionable .. you need to look at your CDR too as it can cause excessive smoking BUT normally it would be Blue smoke (I doubt this is your issue but needs to be mentioned)
but since it quits smoking and runs fine when warmed up leads me to think Compression is low also 400K on it says rings are for sure worn, measuring crank case pressure would tell you a lot about ring condition too but most owner's don't have the tools to test it properly ;(
BTW I just posted a Document on how to test the GP System here ===>> https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...e-highway.html
