2005 Expedition load increase

I love my Expedition, had it a couple years, and it is great.

I use it a couple times a week to pick up a huge load of frozen raw dog food. This can be 1700-2000lbs, The truck has held up great with its stock suspension, but I find that if I don't spread the load just right, the front end gets light and it can be a white knuckle ride, especially in the snow we get too much of up here in Winnipeg.

Are the coil over springs that can up the capacity with a simple fix? Or are there heavier springs I can replace these 15 year old stock ones with that will bear the load better (I'd like to get the capacity up to over 2000lbs...)

Or is bagging it a good idea?

This baby is wonderful, 300K km + and running strong, lots of little things, but so comfortable and a workhorse. No where near as much work as my 1964 E100 was, for sure 40 years of owing Fords...

Jeff

I've beefed up my E-Series rear springs but as they're leaf springs that's somewhat easy. If the Expedition rear springs are coils I'd check with Moog for something with a progressive rate. You could also add air bags if new springs with a slightly higher rate don't do the trick. You could add or release air pressure as the cargo load changed, perhaps with one of those small and inexpensive 12 VDC tire inflators?

Good luck with this!

I had a ‘99 Expedition that I used for plowing. Carried weight in the back to counter balance the plow. Installed Timbrens in both the front and rear and they helped with the squatting.

Are you carrying a ton of dog food in the cab of the Excursion or on a trailer?

If you're carrying that in the cab, you probably won't get it balanced properly even with load assist. You're pushing the thing to or past GVWR, and pretty sure that exceeds the rated payload. If you are carrying that much you probably aught to be putting it into a trailer. Not saying it can't do it, dad't hauled a few tons in the bed of a half ton with nothing but helper springs, but that doesn't make it a good idea.

If you are putting it into a trailer and squatting like that, have a you considered a weight distributing hitch? It'll keep the rig level, won't effect ride when not attached, and less to break.

As for beefing up you suspension to keep it level, given the coil springs I think your only option would be load assist bags if they even make them for that.

Cargo is in the truck, 32lb boxes, 54 right now, distributed more towards he centre now, to try and get more balance (started putting 4 in he front seat, removes some of the weight from the very back towards the front). There is space to get it to 66, would save 1 trip in 6 if I can get it a little more beefy in the back end...

I can't seem to find any aftermarket items for it, no Timbrens for this model.

Would converting to airbags make sense? I see lots of aftermarket kits for converting from air springs, which makes me cautious about converting to them...

Anyone know of any aftermarket oversized springs, or coil over options?

Sounds like you're simply over loading the vehicle so maybe buying or borrowing a small trailer would make more sense? What tires are you running---are they rated to handle your additional weight?

If you insist on beefing up the current suspension contact Moog--they probably have a workable solution for you.
