what do the numbers mean?
What do the numbers of the trucks mean? Ford used to have the 100 and now they have the 150. GM and Dodge have 1500.
I know the 150/1500 are 1/2 ton axles and the 250 is 3/4 and such. But where did these numbers start and what is the correlation between the number and the axle capacity?

Not really. In 03, both the F250 and F350 have the same rear axle (and springs) rated at 6830lbs. F250's come standard with a 3042lb tire, so the sticker on the door says 6084lbs for the rear axle.
Like Daimon said, the days of 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton are gone. It's all what they are rated for.
Case in point...the rear axle of my truck weighs 2900lbs with a full tank. So take that from the 6084 and you get 3184lbs which is over a ton and a half. BUT...technically I am limited to the 8800lb gvwr so my legal payload is 1900lbs (almost a ton) because my truck weighs 6900lbs. Confused yet?
