Wheel Bearings

I've been fidgeting around with my front passenger wheel bearings all day trying to get them on right. I can't seem to get everything in far enough so I can stick the cotter pin through the castle nut. Wondering if the bearing the PO installed is wrong and causing issues. Haven't pulled apart the driver side yet to compare. Bill, hoping you'll be able to chime in here. Does anyone have a diagram of the wheel bearings install for a '66 F250 with the I beams? Part numbers would also be appreciated.

Sounds like the races aren't seated.

Races? I'm not super familiar with the anatomy of this area of the vehicle.

That's what the bearings ride on inside the hub

1966 F250 4x2 - Does it have the 12 1/8 x 2" brakes or the 12 x 2 1/2" brakes? If you take pictures of your front hubs and drums we can ID which setup you have. They are quite different than each other.

The races are often referred to as the "cup" and the bearings themselves as the "cone". So the races or cups are the removable "fixed" portion of the pair while the bearing or cone is the removable "moving" portion of the pair. The bearings fall out while the races need to be tapped out from behind with a punch or sometimes brute force.

Did you verify correct seal inner diameter and that it's fully seated (into the hub and onto the spindle)?

I've got the 3 screws on the front that separate the hub from the drum.

'65Ford, I didn't think about that. The inner bearing and seal are stuck on the spindle, not seated on the hub at all. I tried to line them up as best I could when I put it back on, but was never able to get them off in the first place to set things back up the way they should be.

That bearing needs to come off. It should fit snug not tight. That bearing needs to be in the hub and the seal seated in before the hub goes back on.

Yes, that's the 12 1/8 x 2" drums. Parts list No. 10 in the MPC.

Sounds like you've got it figured out now though.

I'll go back in and see if I can get it off. There shouldn't be anything in the way, right? Just needs a little persuasion?

Thanks TA455HO, I couldn't remember which set they were.

Pulled it off using the backing plate, not sure why I didn't think of that before. Got both bearings packed, inner bearing and seal seated in the hub. Everything is happy again. Thanks for the help y'all.

Now I'm curious...Was the inner bearing stuck on the spindle so tightly that pulling the hub forced out the seal? Did you thoroughly clean all bearings and inspect? I'm hoping you installed new seals. I like to polish the spindle where the bearings and seal ride before re-assembly.

Yeah, the inner bearing was pretty well stuck on the spindle. No amount of pulling on it did anything, so I gave a quick pull with the backing plate. I can't say I did a thorough job, honestly wasn't expecting to go through it today so I didn't have seals or anything to clean them with other than rags. Good thing is I can assemble and disassemble that now in a matter of a couple minutes, so I'll go back in and give everything a good once over sometime soon.

About the best information I can find on the procedure is in the shop manual. They have a couple of drawings. Still not great, but the MPC doesn't have any drawings this good or even close that I could find.
