Not sure about the why of shingles just that It can be pretty nasty. As to the shots, I had both. The first caused me a fair amount of arm pain, but thes econd went fine. It varies by the person. My wife who's health is a little marginal had no problems. APparetly there's no difference between the 2 shots -- the second just reinforces the first.
Right, but if someone hasn't had Chicken Pox as a youngster, that's even worse ain't it? If they get it as an adult it can really cause trouble. I seem to remember it was considered a good idea to get that out of the way, right away, for kids.
If you haven't had the chicken pox you don't want the shingles vaccine! You run the risk of the vaccine giving you the chicken pox, then needing the vaccine again as you age.
As an adult, even a senior, you can still get the chick pox if you've never had them. But you can't get shingles until after you've had the chicken pox.
Had chicken pox in like the second grade.
Had the single-dose vaccine about 5 years ago and doc said get the new (more protection) 2-shot version. I didn't have any trouble pain wise other than the arm was just a little bit sore.
The 2 shot treatment was scarce last year when I got it. I had to wait for weeks for both shots.
I've had numerous friends that have had shingles.
I assure you, you do not want shingles.

Hi Kal,
I'm a big, strong guy with a high tolerance for pain. I've never had a shot of any kind have an impact until getting this vaccine. Within minutes I had pain in my shoulder joint a short distance from the shot. 45 minutes later I was so miserable that I didn't bother returning to work. By the time I got home I had chills, body aches, joint pain, headache, nausea. I was thinking the flu had taken hold of me. My wife told the that my symptoms were typical of those that come with that innoculation. They were bad for 3 days before some Extra Strenth Tylenol knocked them out. I could control shingles on my rib cage with topical anesthetics and calamine. And given a choice of those two I'd take the shingled ribs again.
If your doctor asks if you want the new shingles vaccine, the answer isn't just "no", it's "Hell No!". Pull your weapon. Fully automatic is preferred. If the doc tries to change your mind, fire warning shots. Lots of them. If the doc is still not convinced, it's open season. Get me on your jury and you'll walk free.
Holy crap, but that vaccine is about the most painful thing I've ever done.
I had chicken pox so I have been thinking about this. And I don't fire warning shots. But I don't think I'd wanna shoot my Doc though.

WOW!! I'll count myself lucky, then. My wife just had hers on Friday last week and was still taking ibuprofen at least as of yesterday. It seems your situation is flip-flopped in that an outbreak isn't as bad as the shot. My neighbor had an outbreak over his right ribcage the he said had him in tears some days. Another friend's wife had an outreak in one of her EYES!!! he said she claimed to want to die.
Hope you are well and over it soon!
