Groan aftet start

update: figured out it was my AC clutch

What is this groan I am hearing? It is immediately after starting the engine. Normally there is a sucking or wooshing sound that is probably some emissions related jink, bit now it groans like a dying duck and for a longer period of time. It eventually stops and sometimes it is worse than others.

Does it go away after things warm up? Power steering pump?

I get that sometimes as well. Right after startup so no time to start and run to the front to see where it's coming from. Not all the time, but only when I start it up in the morning. I do not recall hearing it later in the day.

I find it odd because it is getting louder and last longer than in the past. If I were to guess it is either vacuum or emissions related. I started getting concerned because it seems like it is getting worse.

It only happens for a 1-3 seconds when I first start the engine. It doesn't sound like power steering

Now that I think about it mine does the same thing. I think it is something with the vacuum canister or emissions canister up on the drivers inner fender. Mine does it even with the key on truck not running.

Yes, thats the sound I'm talking about. The sound is changing, I am thinking that means it is going out. It sounds terrible intermittently.

I can't for the life of me remember what it was now, but this was a common question way back...

Something in the heating/AC box? Not the blend door, but one of the other doors that are powered by vacuum. Vacuum leaking down? Got ESOF 4x4? There is a vacuum reservoir (and, I believe, a one-way valve in before it, so it should hold vacuum). It's on the passenger-side wheel well that is known to crack.

Something to check would be the brake booster. That elbow where the vacuum line attaches is actually a one-way valve. It will groan as the booster gets vacuum, and then stop when the vacuum evens out. Next time you go to start the truck after sitting overnight, see if the brake pedal is still soft, or it's very hard.

Yes, I have ESOF that doesnt work. I have been manually locking hubs for a few years. I've been putting diagnosing that off for a while LOL

You could always disconnect and plug the vaccum before the ESOF solenoid

It's the fuel level needle...

My previous 04 did it every time at start up, manual shift transfer case. I never found a correlation to anything, and everything functioned accordingly. I don't think that my current 04 does it- I haven't really paid attention.
Because it is pretty common, it's probably something normal in the vacuum system.

Same thing with mine. While troubleshooting a no start event (bad fuel pump), I noticed the same whosh a couple seconds after trying to start it. I guess it is just a bonus "feature". It is coming from that vac canister on the drivers side fender. No drivability problems after the fuel pump was replaced.

I thought prior discussion here said it was the ABS going through a startup test....?

I finally figured it out. It is my AC Clutch. It makes a horrible noise a moment after start up and then stops.

maybe I need to replace the clutch. The AC blows cold
