5th wheel

I bought my 99 f350 psd several months ago and there were provisions for a 5th wheel hitch in the bed. I dont want to take it out and buy a new hitch (the bottom side is welded in), so im going to make the top side myself and just bolt it to the plate. My question is, how thick is the top plate on other 5th wheel hitches? I was going to use 1/2" steel, i figured that would be enough.

Question Question

Are you talking about a 5th Wheel or a Gooseneck. The way you were describing the Plates it sounds more like you are dealing with a Gooseneck.
A 5th wheel will usually lock into two rails bolted into the truck.
A gooseneck will normally bolt to a plate that is bolted to the bed of the truck and yes most of them have the under plate on the bottom side of the bed.

Thumbs up 1/2 in

Although it might be a bit of overkill. half inch should be more than enough. Have fun.

Yea, 1/2" is overkill. I was at TSC (Tractor Supply Company) today and looked at some other gooseneck hitches and it looked like they were 3/8 maybe 7/16. Id rather be safe then sorry with homemade stuff
