PROBLEMS AT IDLE
I got a 90 F-150, 300 I-6 5 speed with 191,000 miles, she's run good for many years, but recently started having idle problems. It will start good and idle good for a while, then it starts sputtering and missing. I hooked up a timing light, and that thing is jumping all over the place. It will spend about five seconds jumping around about 10-12 degrees BTDC, then it will jump about to 20 BTDC. When it does this, it sputters, then it returns to 10-12 again. Also it will cout out for a split second after a long hard pull, I don't know if that is related or not. Any help is appreciated.

When you check the timing , you have to remove the Spout Connector , are you removing it when you check the timing ? When was the last time you changed the regular maintenance items ? Cleaning the throttle plates & Idle speed control may help .

My buddy has an 1989 f150 with a 5.0, and his was giving him a very similar problem. we replced the egr, the wires, the plugs, same thing. turned out it was the fuel pressure regulator if i remember right. he's on this message board so i'm sure he'll jump on and correct me if i'm wrong. hope that helps.
