well i would first swap the o2 sensors after the cats and see if the code switches banks if it does than you need a new o2 sensor if not than you will probrally need a new cat if you dont care about emissions just get http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...28&prmenbr=361 that it will get rid of your cel
Thanks for the reply. I should have given more info in my origonal post.
First, it's a stock 4.0L OHV with 160,000 miles that runs great. I've owned this Explorer a little over a year and put almost 20,000 miles on it. No CEL for the first couple months but I've been chasing CEL grimlins since. I've replaced most of the emmision sensors and controlers/valves in my attempt to keep the CEL off more than on.
The only thing I added is a home made slug filter. No better milage but it imediatly idled smoother and I do get a lot of crap from the PCV line. This was long before the current trouble code. I have checked for vacume leaks in my backyard application, and it was OK. Writing this, I realize an obvious check . . . I'll remove the slug jar today and see what happens.
I swapped the O2 sensors right after the exhaust manifolds when I first got this code and still have "bank 1 . . ." I have single exhaust and O2 sensor after the cat.
Does any of this info bring any more ideas to mind?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

at 160000 it seems reasonable that the cat would go out i would just get one of those eliminators. does the exhaust comming out smell like gas if does your cat is shot
Well, I haven't had a CEL since I removed the slug filter jar. Yep, I'm feeling a bit silly now, but I am going to reinstall the filter 'cause there is a noticable improvement in idle especially when it's cold. Light or no light the engine runs better and filtering out the slug has to be better for the heads.
Thanks for the help, I am looking into the signal interupter suggested.
