Hey guys I’m working on my 1975 f100 , I have the rad support out right now so thinking of taking the 360 out the truck and putting in a 351w , there is a 4 speed manual transmission in the truck now can I keep the four speed and use the 351 w ? Thanks in advance!
this may help as I think you would at the least need a different bell housing and you may need motor mounts and towers, exhaust manifolds/headers,,you may need a way for the big block radiator or hoses to adapt to the different small block motor , but I am not completely sure but pretty sure the 360 is an FE big block motor so lots of differences but can be done
What's wrong with your 360? Personally, I think the FE engines are superior. If you want to hop it up you can turn it into a 390 or more.
nothing is really wrong with it I have a few minor oil leaks but it runs great , I have just always heard the 351w was a lot more reliable and fuel efficient
Nothing much will get you better fuel efficiency in our old fords besides not driving it. The 351w doesn’t get much better than the 360-390. If you did get better mpg, that would be redundant because you’d have to drive a long ways to recover the money invested in the swap. I see it like buying something on credit: do i want to spend all my money now or a little at a time? Me, i will fill up 20 miles earlier each time.
The best savings you can get is keeping your foot out of it, which is easier said than done.
Do you know all the parts you will need for the swap? Best thing would be to have a donor rig so that you could snag all the little stuff that pops up. Either engine is fine, you’d be happy with a good tuned engine whichever route you choose to go.
I think the better thing here, since you are working in the area, would be to fix your oil leaks, maybe some new gaskets, rebuild the carb if it has been awhile, and then give it a full tune up and maintenance check. If you want, some headers might get you some more power and mileage. That's all much cheaper and easier compared to the swap and you'll have, in my opinion, the better engine.
If you want more than that there are many upgrades you can do to your 360. If you still want to do the swap though and you are in the Florida area, I'd definitely be interested in your 360.
If you end up “having” to do a rebuild you should look into a crank upgrade for more displacement and torque. The easiest and cheapest being the 390 crank. From there you have the 428 crank to make a 410 and the Scat or Eagle to go up to a 445. These “freshen” up threads seem to get out of hand.
Refer to post #2 for the visual differences in bellhousing shape between the different engines. It would be possible to change the bell housing in your application but you will need a series of other parts specific to the engine you would change to, in order to accomplish the task. I applaud your decision to stick with the FE engine and no matter which configuration of it, stock or upgrade of displacement you go with, you will be pleased. A manual transmission has a way of making you realize the amount of power that you have available.
