Oil changes.....

So with these couple of recent posts I just read.....how many guys on here do there own oil and filter changes?....... I have a 2006 f-250...... and a 2016 f-150...... I change my own oil and filter on my vehicles between 4000 and 4500 miles...... I just bought a 2019 explore so now I'm wondering?...... do I change it or pay the fifty bucks every time and have them do it?..... advice is always welcome.......

I do my own (or my mechanics do). Anything outside of oil changes or pads goes to the dealer.

I used to do my own, but disposing of the oil is a massive PITA where I live. Going to the dealer twice a year for $50 is less than half of a full tank of premium fuel.

^^^^Agree^^^^ SO much easier to let the Quick Lane do it. My problem is the Quick Lane I used to use has kinda gone down hill...... Need to find another place.

I always do my own oil changes. It's less time consuming than taking it to the dealer, I know it's done right and I have more confidence in Mobil 1 Synthetic than Motorcraft Full Synthetic (just opinion/marketing hype). It also gives me a chance to casually inspect other things like the exhaust, suspension, axle boots, etc. The fact it saves me $30-$40 does't hurt either. I used to do it right at 6k miles, but have switched to relying on the Oil Life monitor. When it gets down around 20% I start planning to change it. Depending on my schedule it may be a week or two until I get to it.

DIY maintenance here as well. I have a guy that takes all my waste oil for his garage heater so disposal isn't an issue.

Ok this is good feedback......I actually enjoy doing it.....always did ....I'm fortunate where I live a lot of farmers and garages take my used oil for there garage heat..... I always use motorcraft 5-20 and the called for motorcraft oil filters as well...... I agree anything else besides oil and brake pads I would take it in for there service....

Always did my own on the 2011 F150. Still have it, but now have a 2019 F150XL, haven't looked under it to see what a PITA it might be.

While I still do oil changes on a lot of my vehicles myself, the Edge and F150 go to the dealer for "The Works" package. They top off the fluids and rotate the tires as well as the oil change. Call me lazy and I won't deny it, lol. Oh, and they also confirm the brake pads really are new after I've changed them!

I change my own, and will continue to until I can't anymore. I actually enjoy doing it and I know it's done to my standard. It's not cheaper since I use Pennzoil Platinum and A Fram Ultra synthetic filter. But it is faster than driving down to the dealer or oil change place, then waiting. The quick change place gladly takes my used oil, as they get paid for it.

I rotate my own tires too. That way I know the wheels are properly torqued and that the guy didn't beat my wheels and lugs up being sloppy with the impact.

I also do my own brakes and spark plugs. Don't need to worry about wires, points and timing these days.

Transmission and radiator flushes I have done, since I really cant deal with the amount of fluid. A BG transmission flush machine is quick and efficient. I also leave AC to the pros these days too.

DIY guy here as well! Couple of reasons...….1) I know it's done right and 2) I look for other things that may be going "wrong" and fix them...… heck, the last time I went to get a new battery (dealer...and a good one too)...they said let us put it in for you...I though sure, what can go wrong...…. knowing when to stop tightening the terminal clamp is always good...and this guy crushed it..... yeah, took it home pulled it off, heated it up and straightened it out...good for another 14 years!

I hope you have taken that Fram apart and verified that it isn't junk like most of the others they make.

I’ve always changed my own oil because doing it myself, I know it’s done right and to my own personal standards.

Pennzoil “Ultra” Platinum 5W20 Full Synthetic and Wix 57502XP oil filter.

You might want to take a look at their Ultra Synthetic vs the OCOD (orange can of death)

All my own maintenance here. I buy the 6qts of oil and filter at AutoZone, drain the oil and while it is draining I do a couple of other things around the house. Once done I finish the filter, fill i up and run the engine to make sure there aren't any leaks. Next time it's time to change it I take the old oil back to AZ and dump it in their waste container and it gets recycled. I can do a complete change there for around $35, it' done right and I don't have to worry about it.
