Battery light on the dash would come on faintly at idle from time to time so I figured the batteries were getting weak. Didn't have much of a history on the truck when I got it so thought I would invest in new parts to be sure. So, new batteries, new alternator, new positive cables, new starter, and new glow plug relay. I'm riding around feeling all safe and plum proud of myself when a couple of weeks later the battery light stays on after start up. The amp gauge says it's charging, I'm getting 14.5 volts from the back of the alternator to neg side of bat and 14.5 across the batteries at idle. Battery light on the dash is on all the time now. Any advice on my next step?
I thought I cleaned the terminals well when I replaced the batteries. Voltage at the cig lighter is 12.8 volts. Didn't know about the grounds under the kick panels. Battery grounds did seem to not want to tighten like they should. Think it might be a ground problem?
Check the small connectors on top of the alternator. If they are a little loose it will cause the light to flicker on. If that is your problem you can replace the pigtail pretty easily
I pulled all of my grounds and both end of all cables to rid my erratic voltage issues and have bright lights. Didnt know about the cab grounds until a while after.
Both connectors on top of the alternator have the hold clips broken off. I'll get the pigtails ordered. Anyone have a good source for battery ground cables? If it was a ground problem would it still get 14.5 at both batteries? Truck is a daily driver and has never missed a beat but I know that light means something ain't right. Bothersome not knowing.
If alt post is 14 and batteries are 14 and cab is less. Then there is something not right somewhere.
I cleaned the ground cable to block and that made a difference for me. Best to remove all and clean the surfaces. Don't assume tight bolt means it's ok. It's been rusting for years.
There is engine to cab ground too. That gets over looked a lot. There are some From battery to frame.
Pig tail for alt available online and at many auto stores.
