I have pulled the motor out of my truck on the pretense that i would find alot wrong. First I was told that I might have a burnt valve but then i took the heads off and i didn't find one. now i was suggested that the pistions had a bad ring. I didn't find either. Now that i have the motor out and have no "visiable" problems. I might as well rebuild it. I was thinkink about the 400 Kit out of PAW. that would give me the right crank and all. i am thinkin about having the block machined . but from the above you can see i don't know alot. and i don't really want to listen to the folks around here. So...If i take the block and the heads down the the machine shop...what should i ask for?? how do i not look stupid i don't want to look like a girl going in there and not knowin my stuff. Thanks guys.
It is actually better to just come out and admit you are a neophyte and would appreciate any good advice. Don't be embarrased to say "I don't know!" Making sure you are dealing with a quality shop first is job one. If it is not a clean, well lit, orderly place, take your work somewhere else. Ask people you trust with whom they have had good dealings. The best shops I have used have been happy to spend some time to help educate me and I have rewarded them with loyal business. It is my opinion if the machine shop needs some parts, let them sell them to you, they are there to make a living. The boring process goes like this... shop measures bore now, calls out what overbore is required.... orders pistons, measures pistons, bores to size. GL
