Just picked a up a 1998 4.2 V6 2WD F150. I bought it with a bad trans but the overall truck is clean with only 150k on it and figured for a few dollars I can have a great all around truck. The internet is a vast space with many different opinions so I figured I'de come here because FTE hasnt let me down in the past. Question is;
Do I need to find a V6 97/98 2wd auto 4R70W to put into my truck or are there others out there that I can look at like a 4R70W from a 4.2L 03 or a 4R75W/E from another V6 truck. I know the V8 trans wont work because of the bell housing differences but if its just a control module harness and a crossmember mod for others I'm all ears. Thanks for any help.
If you know a local trustworthy trans rebuilder I'd go that route---no compatibility issues that way. I happen to know two guys I trust to do this sort of job, typically charge way less then $1,000 if you do the R&I of the transmission and deliver/pick up from their shops.
