I am currently researching a good bit on what all the necessary parts are required to pass a smog test in california with my bronco. It is a 1985 bronco 5.8 HO vin code H. It is a 49 state federal vehicle. The previous owner messed with it a little bit and put long tubes and an edlebrok carb on it and some of the vacuum lines go to nothing. I believe most of the original stuff is still there though. It would be great if I could get a list of what a smog tech would look for and maybe a location to see if I have it or not. Thank you for your help in advance.
We have no way of knowing what the inspector will pass and what he will not. I live in Va and I carefully research and ask people I know who is picky and who is not. You need to do the same. If you go by the book, the headers, carb, all that stuff has to go. Can you put the stock exhaust on it and hide the carb and missing lines under a large original air cleaner, I don't know. With careful tuning you can probably get it to pass the tailpipe test. You are going to need a smog pump and all those pipes also.
I'm willing to spend money on it. Its sentimental and kind of going to be a long term restoration project. It has air pump, air bypass and air diverter valves. I am getting stock manifolds and the stock carb and any other parts it needs
If you do all that you can probably get it to pass, but you will need to do a lot of research on all those doo-dads and vacuum lines and what they do. What you do not know, and this may change from station to station, is how savvy the inspector is on all that stuff. Anyone can spot a plugged vacuum port. But does it actually work or not? You can put ball bearings in the lines if you need to plug them off. Some of those vacuum gizmos are now hard to find and buy.
Has a cat but it's old and rusty and some cheap aftermarket one. I've got the factory carb ordered, I'm gonna have to buy a 49 state mid pipe somehow, and get factory manifolds. I'm going to rebuild the motor too. It's got the air pump, the air bypass and diverter valves, most of the vacuum stuff too. I'm going to need a couple check valves and vacuum restrictors. He took the metal pipe off right at the missing check valve below the diverter valve so I'll probably get some high temp silicon hose and a fresh check valve for the line going to the carb. I have to find the heat riser valve that goes in the driver side manifold. Cant find a new one I'll have to hopefully get lucky on car-part.com for a used one. Any other resources anyone has will help alot.
Autozone and others sell new exhaust manifolds. Dorman makes them. They list them as Dorman 674-166 and 674-155. Looking at the pictures, the passenger side outlet has the ball to accept the flare on the y-pipe, the driver's side is flat. That tells me the driver's side will take a gasket and then the heat riser unit which will have a flat and then the ball on the other side to accept the y-pipe. You can do a search on those Dorman numbers and find the cheapest place to get them.
Are you now a resident of CA or future resident? What state is the vehicle titled in?
Usually, if bringing in a 49 STATE vehicle, there will be an exemption issued but the vehicle has to be compliant with FED REG.
If you have your CALIBRATION CODE NO, you can go directly into the FORD MPC and it will give you a complete listing of how the vehicle was assembled for emissions.
Would anyone happen to have the part number for the pipe that goes from the check valve under the diverter valve to the pipe on the cat? Or maybe a suitable aftermarket solution? Oh and rock auto has the best price on the manifolds and most of the other stuff I need
I am a california resident and I've had this bronco for a long time but i left it in North Carolina for a long time. I shipped it over and started tearing it apart to get it ready. My plans are to slowly rebuild everything. Rebuilt engine, transmission, t case, 9 inch rear, solid axle swap a high pinion dana 44 and fix some of the rust it has. So itll be a long slow process
It is still titled In North Carolina and it is a 49 state vehicle. I am trying to get it in line with the fed regulations i just want to make sure i have everything. Thank you for everyone's help so far
So when I was replacing the emissions stuff on my truck(have it stockpiled just not assembled) I got some from Autozone as they seem to be the only ones to stock stuff for our era trucks. Rockauto as well had the check valves and things. The rest I got from ebay. Some of that isn't easy to search for by name or part number. If you have trouble finding parts, let us know which ones. I'm fair to middlin' at finding parts on ebay these days.

I forgot to add, I got an exhaust manifold from rockauto for my 300 6, casting was pretty low quality. It'll work, and it was way cheaper than the others I found listed, but I'll have to clean up the casting some, square up the ports and remove the overcast from where the sand broke out of the cores.
