I was gonna ask in the general forum but this one is way busier
Does anyone here run underbody coatings? i would prefer the non asphalt based coatings, something more similar to the fluid film/watery oil type deal, the asphalt would be to difficult to do work on after its been sprayed imho.
i know there are kits you can order online (specifically fluid film)
they use a LOT of salt on the roads where i live, my old 2008 i bought brand new looked like hell after the first year, im not letting that happen to my platinum this time around
would like to hear what you guys do. thanks

I failed to do anything to my '02 F250 back when I bought it and regret it as I used it for snowmobiling a lot during the winter and they use a lot of salt here in Michigan. After ordering my '19 back in August I searched for what I was gonna use and I decided on the Krown as I had one not too far from me. I tried the fluid film once on my '02 but I never kept up on it and the rust was already there. Also for the cost of buying more fluid film, it wasn't much more to have the krown applied and I didn't have to crawl underneath the truck to do it. I plan on getting it done once a year and hope it does me well on this truck as I plan to have it a long time.
On my 2019 SD I went to Ming auto . They offer a “New car package” which includes rustproofing/ undercoating, paint sealant and leather interior protection for $800 I believe. They use the existing access holes and DONT drill holes which I like. The rustproofing is guaranteed for 10 years which was way better than what the dealership offered me. This may be overkill for the aluminum body.
Does anyone know if there are Fluid Film installing dealers like Krown, or is it all DIY?
I found a Krown dealer about 90 minutes away but I cant decide if I am crazy about them drilling holes in the new truck.
I "really" want to do some type of undercoating / underbody treatment on this truck.
The underside of my 2004 got to be appalling with how much rust it had and I didnt even drive it that much. That truck lived a charmed life of spring / summer race car towing with occasional winter driving and even then got crazy amounts of rust underneath. The front disc brake backing plates literally rotted away to nothing.
I dont want to have that happen to this '19. It got so I hated getting underneath my '04 for anything.

I lean towards LSP, especially on a new truck. The LSP is "tacky", as opposed to oily, it seems to last longer and is not as much a mess when wrenching.
Second would be Fluid Film. I'm applied direct and over oil / NH Oil as a follow-up treatment.
NH Oil seems okay but I wouldn't buy over fluid film or LSP..
I've DIY on over 20 vehicle and reapplied numerous times. I'm a huge fan of nearly all preventative treatments, all are much better than nothing. . My 2005 Duramax has been in New England since new, treated at least every other year and is virtually rust free.
Bought my truck 4 months ago, researched a bit and i ended up going with WoolWax. It's very similar to fluidfilm, doesn't smell as bad and it's a bit thicker so it has better washoff properties. I bought the DIY kit with the spray gun, nozzles, and 2 gallons. I used nearly all of it thoroughly coating the frame inside/out, crossmembers inside and out, suspension, hitch, ect. I didn't go over the body this year (was running out of time, dipping into the low 40s) assuming its aluminum and should be pretty good, if anything i can hit it with next year's application. I applied it probably 2 months ago, and its been through quite a few rain storms, snow, ice, slush and a ton of salt brine/grit. Still looks very good, like the day I applied it! No washoff from what i can see and still very protected. I ordered the stuff in black so it's easier to see where it's applied, as well as covering up anything.
I will definitely be applying every fall just before winter, I plan on keeping this truck and protecting is a must have for the salt belt.
I also HIGHLY recommend staying away from any kind of rubberized undercoating. It will absolutely destroy your vehicle. Ziebart is the most famous for it. Here's a video showing what it does.

Thats a huge endorsement for doing "something" rather than nothing.
I would love to keep this truck looking good underneath. I never expected the kind of rust that bloomed on my '04, and as I said my truck lived a charmed life compared to real working trucks, I cant imagine what it would have looked like if I actually used it all winter in Northeast PA.
I did the fluid Film myself. Bought on Amazon. Used 3 cans by hand. Smells like cat pizz for a while. I did every seam with it. I sprayed inside the frame everywhere I found an opening. And I sprayed anything in bare metal.
I feel pretty good about how it went on. We have been mild so I only drove a few miles in salt but it all looks good so far. I have one can for touch ups and will likely do it annually....
Also I bought Salt away and an applicator. Its a marine product for desalinating. Ill be rinsing with that any time the truck gets salty.
