First off, Im new to this board. Second off, Ive seen first generation Exploders with 302s in 'em. I was wondering if a person could fit a 300 cid I6 under the hood. I would be using a whole other driveline (dana60 up, 9" rear and whatever tranny I could find). Fullsize axles, solid front end, maybe 4-6" lift and 31-33s, nothing huge but extremely functional. I am not a fan of the v6. Im a I6 or v8 guy. If a 300 wouldnt work I would go find a 250, altho im sure a 300 would fit. Thanks guys
I know the 302's fit and are done fairly simple because there are a lot of kits out to do it. I don't know the size on the 300, so I can't say offhand. With it being inline, I don't think there would be a problem, except in the height range and motor mounts.
With all the aftermarket parts available for 302's, why not use one of them instead? Or do you already have a 300 to use?
You might want to do some serious measuring before attempting this. The I6 is a long engine, and the Explorer has a fairly short engine compartment........
I would do a 347 or 387w stroker kit if i could afford the insurance. Im thinking, however, with a mild body lift i could gain some more engine compartment space depth cause the body is off the chassis and length because the tranny tunnell will be higher and I could move the engine back more. I would probably have to use an electric pusher fan mounted infront of the rad. The reason I would like to use the 300 is because they have a decent amount of torque down low (265ft.lbs @ 2100rpm?). Plus, there is a very low desire for them, wich would be able to provide me, plentiful, with cheap cheap parts.
From what I understand from the insurance point - you could list the X under 'Recreational Vehicle' to lower the insurance. I do not know that changing the engine is going to raise the insurance that much - if at all. It that was the case, then any engine that did not come as a standard choice would be considered higher. My 302 in my 89 Mazda B2200 did not change anything...
Either or would be a good choice, but I would go with the 302 personally...
