Question for anyone who has a 19 F150 in the new Abyss Gray. How is it to keep clean? Does it show dust, fine scratches or swirl marks? We have had two black trucks in a row and I have vowed never to buy another black vehicle again! I have said that before though... I love black when it is clean but a few seconds later it seems like it is dirty, and I live on a gravel road. We like bold colors and we thought we were stuck on getting magnetic or ruby red then we saw abyss gray. I also like that there aren’t very many trucks out in that color too. I know anything will be easier to keep clean than black but we are just curious if anyone has any real world experiences with the color?
I’m surprised Abyss has hung around. Leadfoot was a much nicer color. Abyss changes to a robin egg hue in certain light, and goes feminine fast. Sometimes I think Fords color selector is blind in one eye and can’t see out the other.
I agree with you on the whole black truck problem. When I went to go and buy a new F150, I really liked how the Abyss Grey looked. Problem being that I looked at like 9pm when it was nice and dark out. Looked at it the next day in the light and it was bordering onto baby blue. Had a few good swirls into it already. Saw a Stone Grey close by and its ultimately what I went with. Heres some takeaways I have from all we have.
The 2018 F250 Platinum we have, is Ruby Red. It gets dirty quickly and shows swirls and micro scratches if you get within about 5 feet. When its clean however? one of the meanest and richest colors offered.
We also have a 2018 Taurus SHO in magnetic. Great color if you want to stay dark but avoid black. Doesn't show swirls too bad and is a HEAVY metallic. I run Chemical-guys Blacklight on it all the time which makes it that much better. Great color choice however there is a fair number of magnetic 150s out there.
Lastly theres my daily, a 2019 F150 in Stone Grey. Great color as well. Doesn't show swirls very much, but can be fun in the lighting. I've been told it looks everywhere between gold, brown, grey, green, and once silver depending on the light.
My wife and I went today and looked at an abyss gray F150, all she said was NO! It looks blue on the shady side and matches the concrete its parked on on the sunny side of the truck. We saw a ruby red, and magnetic both with the sport package. She chose the ruby as number one, the magnetic as two and blue jeans three. I just have never seen blue jeans in a sport package, we aren’t a big fan chrome either. She is the primary driver of the truck and I am the primary washer of the truck... I just asked not to choose black again! I LOVE it when it’s clean, but... I am sure that anything with a metallic finish will be better than the black of our 2016. Our 2013 black had a metallic flake in it and it didn’t show the swirl marks and fine dust nearly as bad as the 2016. Unfortunately we were forced out of the 13 due to someone pulling out in front of her while she was driving about 55 mph. She and my daughter walked away without a scratch! Now she doesn’t want to drive anything smaller. We will see what the next few days bring I guess.
My 2015 is the metallic black (Tuxedo Black). It has been surprisingly easy to care for. Looks exceptional clean, not that bad when dirty. The only thing I don’t like about flake in black paint is that people want to wipe it with their finger when it’s clean because they think something is on the paint.
Our 13 was tuxedo black but they changed the black in 16 and took the metallic out. It’s like looking in a mirror when clean but it sure is tough to keep clean! It sure is the exact opposite of my school bus yellow 2017 F350! That color doesn’t hardly show anything!
I vote stone grey or magnetic. My last truck was Sterling Grey which is pretty close to magnetic and it was easy to keep clean. It was dark enough to look good but it hid gravel dust well. Blemishes didn't show up much either but if you had to touch the paint up it showed due to all the metallic in the paint, actually fine scratches would virtually disappear in direct sunlight.
My current truck is stone grey and I really like it. It hides dust even better and it changes color depending on the lighting so its like getting a new truck all the time. I get a lot of complements on the color.
ETA. If Blue jeans is like the dark blue Ford had from '04-'08 it is almost as bad as black. We had an '07 in that dark blue and it was hard to keep clean and every scratch showed up. Blue Jeans is a nice looking color though.
We just found a ruby red 2019 that we are going to trade for. It’s still a fairly dark color but it has a lot of metallic in it so should be a little easier to keep clean.

True, Ruby Red is one of the nicest colors available for the F150 but just like black, it’s going to show every scratch, swirl mark, water spot, and blemish when it’s clean.

Well I guess I am used to keeping black clean so if the ruby red isn’t any better than black ohh well. The ruby red has so much metallic flake in it that I know it will be easier too keep clean. White and silver are out of the question, they just look too plain. White looks like any other fleet work truck and I have never liked silver. Just my opinion.
I liked Guard the best, kind of a greenish gray. They only seem to produce that color in short runs though. A few months in 2015 and another few in 2018.
Honestly, the best color that I have driven for not showing dirt and scratches is my school bus yellow company work trucks. But the only way you can get that color is special order only, options and packages are limited as well.

I thought Abyss Gray had flake in it, I'm surprised it still shows scratches that bad.
I do like my Lithium but it's as bad as black for showing scratches and swirl marks. Looks like the dealership went over it with a buffer when they got it on trade in and it has swirl marks all over it, oh well.
The Windveil Blue on my Mustang (light blue metallic) is great- it has to be REALLY dirty to even look dirty. Once had a coworker compliment me on how clean it looked when I hadn't washed it in 2 weeks and had driven it in rain a couple times.
