Exclamation Slow moving

I am looking to buy a 1992 F-150 4x4. It has some issues though. My car has laid down on me and the only thing I have is a motorcycle and the weather is getting messy. I do not want a car payment so I have a few bucks saved up and I am trying to only spend that. With that being said I found this truck and the guy wants $1,000 for it. So I went to look at it and he tells me that there is something wrong with it because when he puts in gear the motor stays strong but it only pulls forward or backward at a slow pace. He told me that he hauled fire wood in it twice and then it started with this. So my question is could it be the rear end or maybe the transmission? A frien of mine seems to think that it could be some with the brakes and them being locked down on the rotor or drums. I wanted to see if there is any know issues out there like this before I buy this truck.

I moved this thread to here (1987-96) from the engine-only forum because I think you'll get better help here on this type of problem.

manual or automatic trans ?

either way, with only $1000 to spend and needing a vehicle quickly, i would stay away from any vehicle that is in obvious need of mechanical repairs.
around here, a decent used, road-ready car can be had (from a private seller) for $1000 if you are prepared to overlook a cosmetic issue or two. trucks run a bit more.

X2 on find another vehicle. You need transportation, not another wreck, project or hobby, of which that truck could be 1 or all 3, but reliable transportation it is not.

Could be as simple as low transmission fluid. Warm up the engine/transmission then check the fluid level as well as color. If the fluid is brown and/or smells burned...move to the next prospect. If it's low, add some fluid then see what happens.
