Steering components

I want a fresh front end when I redo my suspension next week.
What all components should I replace to get a new front end?
Ball joints? U joints? Tie rods? Have bearings checked? Anything else?
Just do not want to forget anything.

I want this thing to be as new and as fresh as it can be so I have a nice new starting point for many years to come.
Thanks for any advice!

When I did mine I replaced the ball joints, tie-rods, steering Box, steering column, front hubs. Hope that helps..
I used XRF tie-rods, Napa ball joints(availability, would have ordered XRF if I had the time to wait for them when they were done), timken hubs, redhead box followed by an a1 cardone brand as the redhead had issues out of warranty. I dont recall what brand the lower steering shaft was but I think I ordered it through tasca ford so it would be motor-craft if I remember correctly.

Hope that helps.

This helps very much! Thank you.
Did you notice a considerably better driving experience with less play and steering walk?

a better question is are you experiencing a less then great driving experience?

if so describe it and we can point you to likely suspects to investigate and the corrections needed to fix.

The truck is almost 16 years old. I am about to install the suspension you recommended. So, while under there, I thought I would have the shop freshen up the front components. I want it to steer “like new”, when it was first driven off the lot as a new vehicle. I just want all new steering components and front suspension. So I figure I’ll replace all up front steering components when i install the new suspension. But I cannot seem to find a list of those, nor can anyone give a simple list. I guess it is not a simple list...?

I gave you the simple list. “Everything that moves”.
the piece by piece detailed list is not simple.
but if a shop is doing it then they should know exactly what to look at and how to measure and test every part for wear.

Ok, thanks Pirate. I will tell the shop my desires and follow their suggestions. That sounded too simple and I like to organize my parts/service list when visiting the shop. This one I will let them diagnose and go from there. Just wanting all new stuff underneath so I don’t have to revisit it again in the near future.

I have recently done this also. 2001 6.8. It wasn't all that bad but the steering wander was the bothersome point but figured it was due for other stuff so I wanted to take care of those things before tightening up the steering box. I put in new ball joints, all new tie rods, (sway bar bushings and links had been done recently also). New u-joints in the front axles, all new seals and needle bearings. All that helped a bit but tightening up the steering box really helped. I put a full turn into the the screw to notice a difference FYI.

Great info and insight guys. Thank you so much!
I will take your experiences and share that with the shop so they can check everything out and make the necessary replacements.

I haven't done this to my X, but I had the same mindset on my 1979 Lincoln Town Car almost 30 years ago, the last of the large ones 233" bumper to bumper.
I repalced everything that moved, tie rod ends, pitman arms, idler arms, moog springs front and back, all shocks, 4 cooper tires, all bushings, all ball joints, the list was lengthy. The shop that did the work was a reputable alignment shop. When I recevieved the vehicle after the work, I was floored, that thing drove and handled so tight with no slop or sway that I was amazed at what the original engineered comfort level actually was. It was definately worth it. As far as the Excursion, it's said these were kinda sloppy off the assembly line, so you may find yourself looking at aftermarket improved steering parts.

Lol, '79 Town Car wasn't exactly assembled at a time when American cars (especially FoMoCo) were known for quality of assembly, in fact quite the opposite. Anything put together in the 90's-2000's was done better than anything put together in the mid-late 70's!!!
