I have my 64 F-100 and I got a 292 to go in it. I have been going to working on the motor some days to working on the body of the truck other.
But my question is are the head bolts different sizes? I know it has short ones and long ones. The reason I ask this is I bought a set of heads from a guy yesterday and he said to number the bolts when I remove them because of the length. He said some of them have a extra thread or two and it will cause the head gaskets to blow. Any truth in this?
I disremember the last time I had the heads off a Y block, some time in the 80's I'm sure. I would measure the bolts after I took them out, and be sure I knew what hole they came out of just in case.

You don't really need to number them but you do need to be aware. The shorter bolts, just below the exhaust flange, are all the same length, so no problems there. The longer bolts, under the valve cover, can have the end bolts which are about about 1/4" longer. The holes for those two bolts in the block are counterbored for the dowels, resulting in the thread starting deeper below the deck surface, so the bolts are just a little longer. If you use those bolts in one of the center 3 positions, it may bottom out, preventing the bolt from clamping the head properly, resulting in a blown gasket.
