I have a 1996 Ford F150 (302FI) 4X4. My crank shaft is worn beyond repair. It is worn out on the journal where the thrust bearing goes bad enough so that it walks back and forth enough that the torque converter bolts hit the tin shield between the engine and trans. My question is if you think I should replace or rebuild my engine. If you think I should rebuild the engine is there anything I could do to get more power out of it without messing up the computer; such as flat top pistons, or a little taller cam, or just maybe a good set of headers, or something of that sort, because I pull my car trailer around and the stock engine just didn't seem to have enough power. Thank you in advance.
Yes rebuild the engine! You should be able to drop in a new camshaft. Call Competition Cams and ask them what you will need. I was able to get a camshaft for my 94' 300-6. Haven't put it in yet do to cost constraints. You should also be able to install a taller rocker ratio of 1.6. You can also get a good set of headers for the 302 from either Summitracing or Jegs.
I would definitely go for rebuilding the engine. This way you can modify it a little while you at it. You may be able to bore it out too if your truck's EFI system is mass air flow (MAF) based.
