....why would you want to trap heat in the engine compartment and who are you benefitting by making it more quiet in the area outside of the engine compartment?
It does benefit I would think, or other vehicles would never have it. Sound travels far enough that insulating the hood (at least on some vehicles can make a difference.
It also benefits in a hot climate to keep the cowl intake area slightly cooler. But it also insulates the outer metal, in theory keeping the hood paint happy longer. However, as to that I don't remember seeing much in the way of paint problems on our hoods like we do on so many other truck models.
As for keeping the heat under the hood, with luck the air flow is enough for that. I'm not sure just how much of a heat-sink the hood is to act as a way to evacuate/radiate heat from the engine compartment. Maybe it's more of one than I give it credit for, but never seen any tests done.
So I don't think it's without merit. But I have not done it either. I'm planning to eventually, and will include my Broncos as well. Not 100% sure it's going to help anything, but with such a high percentage of other vehicles out there using hood insulation of some kind or another, I'm interested in trying.
Just like I'd try a rubber pad for our coil springs, even though that's more of a passenger car thing and not something I see on Ford trucks of old. I think some old GM trucks had coil spring insulators, but maybe that was again more of a car thing.
Fire protection? I had a 86 Zcar that a mat under the hood with plastic/nylon fasteners.I f the engine catches fire, melts the fasteners and mat fall on the engine.
I've put some on mine including an ABS plastic liner over the top. Didn't drive the truck much before I tore it down so cant say if it helped or not with sound or heat dissipation. If anything I did it to clean up the under hood look and isolate the vibration of sheet metal and hood structure. (Indiana roads are prone to finding every rattle possible)
Thanks. Yeah, there is a company (here in Stockton I think) that makes a bunch of those insulating thingies for different vehicles. Can't think of the name right off hand, but it's a familiar name I'm sure I'll "remember it" as soon as I hear it!

Grean Bean. That is BA! Where did you buy that from?
Theres a 77 here in the wrecking yard with one installed. Looks stock by the way it fits in the hood. I would have taken it except the po cut a hole for a hood scoop or something

Can you tell me where you purchased this under hood insulation with the blue oval? Thanks.
